Atri Gotra is from the lineage ofBrahmarshiAtri and Anusuya Devi. Brahmarshi Atri is the seer of the fifth mandala (book) of the Rigveda. He had many sons, including Soma, Datta, and Durvasa, who are the incarnations of theDivine TrinityBrahmaVishnu, and Rudra. The trimurti channeled through Brahmarsi Atri when they granted boons to his wife Devi Anusuya for helping the Sun to rise in the east everyday. Soma is called Chandratreya or Chandratre, and Durvasa is Krishnatreya or Krishnatre. Somatreya (Chandra) established the Someshwara Jyotirlinga, used to overcome all kinds of passion. Soma, as the incarnation of Brahma, has the power to cause any species to continue. Chandratre is the Surname which is used by Brahmin Families, who are among lineage of Atri Rishi. Chandratre families can be found in North India,Orrisa,Maharashtra and in West Bengal. Their Gotra is also Chandratre or Chandratreya

I have been striving hard to study about the genealogy of gotra “Krishnatrey” using oral traditions, historical records, genetic analysis, and other records to obtain information about a family and to demonstrate kinship and pedigrees of its members since long. Genealogy is the study of families and the tracing of their lineages and history. In modern times, genealogy became more widespread, with commoners as well as nobility researching and maintaining their family trees. A Gotra is the lineage or clan assigned to a Hindu at birth. In most cases, the system is patrilineal and the gotra assigned is that of the person's father. Recently, the term "gotra" has taken broader meanings to include any lineage, Brahmin or otherwise. Therefore, today, other terms are considered synonymous with gotra and the distinct meaning of the word and the esoteric connotations are lost to many, even within the Brahmin community. I wonder how did the people thousands of years ago realize that genetically there was transference of some unique characteristics only from father to son (in the form of Y-chromosomes). In recent past when it was fashionable to condemn all Indian traditional systems as of no value, non-believers have referred to 'Gothra' as archaic, unscientific, irrelevant and male chauvinistic! The Scientifically proven factor DNA type test and assertions are closer to the Gotra lineage matters. A Gotra relates directly to the original seven or eight Rishis of the Vedas. In this sense, Lord Rama did not have a Gotra, and in rituals his Gotra would be the Gotra of his Brahmin priest. This practice is still common today as it was in ancient times according to earliest Hindu sources. Therefore, Gotra has always been only a Brahmin lineage that descends from seven or eight rishis associated with the Saptarishi or the seven stars of the Great Bear constellation as according to original Hindu Vedic system. The word "Gotra" means "ray." In Brahmin tradition, it is the duty of the Brahmin to keep his particular ray alive by doing daily rituals that he may transmit the power of that ray to others for the benefit of mankind. When the "ray" is extinguished, so is that particular beneficial magical stream dead to the human race and that power lost to mankind forever. Hence the importance of a Brahmin's daily Sandhya.A common mistake is to consider gotra to be synonymous with clan or Kula. A kula is basically a set of people following similar rituals, often worshipping the same God (the Kula-Devata - the God of the clan). Kula has nothing to do with lineage or caste. In fact, it is possible to change one's Kula, based on his faith or Ishta-deva. It is common practice in Hindu marriage to inquire about the Kula-Gotra meaning Clan-Lineage of the bride and bridegroom before approving the marriage. In almost all Hindu families, marriages within the same gotra are prohibited since people with same gotra/gothra are considered to be siblings. But marriage within the kula is allowed and even preferred. Shudras also have gotras, and follow it in marriages. For example a weaver falls under Markandeya gotra. Markandeya was known be a Maharishi and had 60 sons. Marriages are held within Markandeya but never in same family name. So, every weaver falls under one of these gotra. And the family name is given by the Brahmin or Guru's name. Therefore every Hindu does have a gotra and only a person following the gotra system can be called a Hindu.

Brahmarsi Atri is the seer of the fifth mandala (book) of the Rig Veda. He had many sons including the three famous ones - Soma, Datta and Durvasa who ere the incarnations of the trimurti - Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra respectively. The trimurti channeled through Brahmarsi Atri when they granted boons to his wife Devi Anusuya for helping the Sun to rise in the east everyday. Datta is called Dattatreya i.e. Datta the son of Atri as Vishnu always respects the lineage. Similarly Soma is called Chandratreya and Durvasa is Krishnatreya. Somatreya (Chandra) established the Someshwara Jyotirlinga used to overcome all kinds of passion. Soma has the power to cause any species to continue i.e. the power of creation as he is the incarnation of Brahma.

Boons are granted after testing both parents. Just as Atri had surpassed every form of penance known including standing on one leg for a thousand years and reciting the Dakshinamurti Mantra, Devi Anusuya was also tested by the Trimurti. The Trimurti tested the chastity of Anasuya. They arrived as Brahmins and requested for food on the condition that she has to serve it in the nude. Anasuya agreed without any hesitation and used her shakti to convert the brahmins (actually Trimurti) into babies and offered them food without any dress. The trimurti reverted back to their original form only after they were fed and Anusuya had dressed - and blessed her.

Brahma Purana adds that the blessings of Durga resulted in the birth of a daughter Shubhatreyi. Other sons were involved in various activities. Ratha, the sone of Atri, was involved in receiving and recording some parts of the fifth mandala of the Rig Veda. Hence he embodied the Veda and is referred to as Rathatreya i.e. Rath the son of Atri. There are a number of famous names belonging to the lineage of Atri - Shaavaashva, Avishtir, Purvaatithi,Mudgala, Uddaalaki, Shaakalaayani, Chaandogya, to name a few.

The greatest contribution of the Atreya is the Rig Veda. There are two main brahmanas (books) that are used to understand and learn the Veda of which the Atri Brahmana is considered the purest and highest.

Rishi Atri finds mention in almost every list of the Rishi’s drawn up for various purposes.

The most important list for Brahmin’s is the three who discovered AUM the cosmic sound symbolising creation or Brahma (a), preservation or Vishnu (U) and dissolution or Shiva (M). These three were Rishi Gautama (A), Rishi Atri (U) and Rishi Bharadwaja (M). He followed his father Brahma in giving the sacred thread which has three strands symbolizing A-U-M. Together these three strands indicate the vow that a Brahmin takes to recite and adhere to AUM (also pronounced OM). The first three threads of the Brahma vrata (promise of the Brahmin) is related to Bhu loka (earth plane). The second set of three threads is given after marriage and is related to the Bhuva loka (solar system) while the third set of three threads Deeksha (initiation)and is related to svarga loka (heavens). Then there is the list(s) of Saptarishi or the seven seers associated with the pole star [Big Dipper] where Rishi Atri always features with Rishi’s Kashyapa and Vasistha. These are the seven Mind born (Manasa Putra) of Brahma and the progenitors of the human race.He is a Brahmarishi as well indicating complete understanding of the Brahman or supreme truth. He is a Maharishi and the original teacher of Ayurveda, Jyotisha, Astronomy, Ganita (Mathematics), Poetry and Prose etc.
